Lane was born in Fagatogo Eastern American Samoa, the son of Fatutoa Levi and Nana Levi of Fagatogo Tutuila American Samoa. He enlisted in the US Marine Corps on April 21, 1969 in Oakland CA. arriving in Vietnam on October 15 and was assigned to Company C, 1st Battalion, 7th Marines, 1st MARDIV (Rein) FMF.

Just past midnight, several Chicom grenades were thrown into the night defensive position of a PPB (Platoon Patrol Base) located in a valley northeast of Hill 189 in Duy Xuyen District. Two Marines were wounded by shrapnel and evacuated for treatment. Cpl Levi died of multi fragmentation wounds at the NSA Station Hospital in DaNang later the same day.
