Richard Schoonmaker "Dick" Armstrong, Jr., 78, passed away Tuesday morning, May 17, 2011, at his home.


He was born in Greenwich, CT to the late Richard S. and Bernice Baker Armstrong. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Floy A. Barnard.


Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Mary Carol Smith Armstrong; daughter, Kimberly A. Heath and husband Jeff; son, Richard S. "Rick" Armstrong, III and wife Cathy; and three granddaughters Morgan and Jordan Armstrong, and Kaylyn Heath all of Bristol, TN. Also surviving is one nephew, Robert "Rob" Barnard of Minot, ND and numerous sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, nieces and nephews.


Dick attended public schools in Crestwood, White Plains, and Katonali, NY; graduated East Penns Valley H. S., Millheim, PA; and Penn State University. In addition, he attended Cornell University, Brockport State University, and Delhi University, all in NY state.


He was a member of the Alpha Tau Alpha Honor Society and proudly served as a sergeant in the U.S. Army 1953-1955. He also taught vocational agriculture and junior high school science; was a sales representative and advertising manager for E.R. Squibb & Sons, senior product manager for Beecham Labs, and retired from Smith-Kline Beecham.


In addition to being an avid hunter, fisherman, and woodworker, Dick was very involved in various organizations including the NRA, Moose Lodge, and American Legion. He was a 40-year member of Emmanuel Episcopal Church, Bristol, VA where he served as a member of the choir, vestry, Jr. and Sr. Warden; Executive Board of the Episcopal Diocese of SWVA; as a delegate to annual Diocesan Council; Lector and Lay Eucharistic minister, Social Club, and Meals on Wheels. He was also a member of the Around Town Dance Club and the Bluff City Dance Club.


Visitation will be held at Weaver Funeral Home on Saturday, May 21, 2011 from 6-8 p.m. The Order for Burial with Eucharist will be held on Sunday, May 22 at 3 p.m. at Emmanuel Episcopal Church, Bristol, VA with Father David L. Booher officiating. Interment will follow at Tri-Cities Memory Garden, Blountville, TN.


In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Emmanuel Episcopal Church, 700 Cumberland Street, Bristol, VA earmarked "Building Fund" or to the American Heart Association.
