Taps sounded today for John Fry, Aspinwall Civil War veteran, reuniting him with his brother and war "buddy" who died two years and two months ago. The 94 year old veteran, who spent ten months of his two years' service with the Union Army in the Confederate prison at Andersonville, died at the home of his son, Charles Fey, of Aspinwall.
The bothers Edward and John joined the Union army in 1863 and served side by side in a number of engagements. Edward at 90, died on June 23, 1936.
Mr. Fry was a retired railroad conductor. He started working on the railroad in 1860, when he was sixteen years old, and after the war returned to his job. He was a brakeman between Blairsville, his former house, and Kiski junction until 1874, and then he became a conductor.
In those days he often recalled, "it took ten hours to go from Pittsburgh to Blairsville, and If you tried to go over twelve miles an hour, the engine would heat up." His worst experience he said was the ten months he spent at Andersonville.
Mr. Fry born in Loretta, Pennsylvania, moved to Aspinwall from Blairsville in 1922. He is survived by his son; a sister, Mrs. Lawrence Eckenrode, Crescent, PA., and a brother Anacetas A. Fry, of Silvis, IL.
He was a member of the Aspinwall M. E. Church, the Blairsville F & A.M. No. 355. O.R.C. of Pittsburgh and the Finley Patch Post No. 137.
The funeral was held at the home of his son, and the body was taken Blairsville and military funeral services were held by the Methodist Episcopal Church with burial in the Blairsville Cemetery.
