Ella Apger, 83, of Bremerton died Aug 22, at Belmont Terrance Skilled Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in Bremerton. She was born is Sioux Center, Iowa, to Dick and Betsy (Mulder) Westra. She graduated from high school there. She moved to California with her family in 1940 and enlisted in the Navy in 1941. She served during WWII and was discharged in 1943 as a yeoman first class. She went to work as a secretary for the McDonnell Douglas Aircraft company, then put herself through night school as a school secretary to earn enough credits to enter the university. She attended Cal State-Los Angeles, receiving a bachelor's and master's degrees in mathematics. She taught math in the Los Angeles area for more than 20 years. After retiring, she volunteered for many years. She was president of the San Fernando Valley chapter of the American Red Cross and typed reports for the Los Angeles Police Department's homicide division. She married Floyd Agper on Jun 21, 1958, in Bellflower, Calif. He died in 1995, and she moved to Washington to be with her family. Mrs. Apger enjoyed teaching, reading and her grandchildren. Survivors include son James D. Roswell of Belfair; daughter Paula S. Cook of Poulsbo; and 10 grandchildren. Services will be private. Arrangements are under the direction of Miller-Woodlawn Funeral Home of Bremerton.
