Charles Daniel Garner joined an Illinois National Guard unit in 1950, and when the unit was activated due to the Korean War he accepted a field commission as 2nd Lt. He married Gloria Randall. In late 1952, he was sent to Korea with a “Heavy Weapons” unit, (Unit 38, Inf, Regt 2nd DIV. U.S. Army, KIA Grade 01). He was killed on February 26, 1953, when the enemy over-ran their position. His remains were returned for burial at Dodge Grove Cemetery in Mattoon, Illinois.
Lt. U.S. Army, Korean War- Lt. Garner was killed in action on 2-26-1953 while serving with the 38th Infantry Regiment of the 2nd Infantry Division in North Korea.

He is the son of Mr. & Mrs. O.E. Garner of Heyworth, Illinois, and the husband of Mrs. Gloria Garner of Peoria, Illinois, and they were married in Peoria on June 3, 1950. Lt. Garner was with the 44th Infantry Division, National Guard before it was activated in February of 1952, and did further training at Fort Benning, Georgia, and Camp Cooke, California. He was employed at Caterpilar before he was activated.

Awards: Purple Heart, Combat Infantry Badge, National Defense Medal, Korean Service Medal with One Service Star, United Nations Service Medal, Korean Presidential Unit Citation, Republic of Korea War Service Medal.
