Rose M. Shave is considered to be Nunda NY's most gifted artist.

Rose was the youngest of four children of William and Elizabeth Shave. Raised in Nunda, she attended Ingham University in 1876 and became the student of Prof. Lemuel M. Wiles, a native of Perry NY. By the end of 1877 her abilities landed her a job teaching art at the University. In 1888 she spent the summer studying art at the Academy Julian in Paris, France.

By 1895 she was considered one of the top watercolor artists of flowers and still life in the United States. Her work appeared in the Academy of Design in New York and the Cambridge Valley and Danbury Fairs of New England.

By this time she had returned to Nunda where she spent the rest of her life teaching art to local students in her home on East Street until her death in 1925.

Today you can see many of her paintings in the Rose Shave Gallery in the Nunda Historical Society Building in Nunda NY.
