Doug was retired from Federal Paper Company and was the owner of Simmons' Beverage Mart and Grocery in Calabash, N.C. He served on the Brunswick County Board of Commissioners for two terms and was the mayor of Calabash for twelve years. He was an avid deer hunter and a member of the McMillan Hunting Club.
Surviving are three daughters, Lisa Simmons, Calabash, N.C., Amanda Smith, Ocean Isle Beach, N.C., and Lynn Hayes, Myrtle Beach, S.C.; three brothers, Vinson Simmons Jr., Calabash, N.C., Fred Simmons, Supply, N.C., and Robert Simmons, Calabash, N.C.; two sisters, Carol Geddings, Orlando, FL, and Betty Leonard, Calabash, N.C.; five grandchildren, Brendan Simmons, Jessica Smith, Kristen Smith, Hunter Hayes, and Fischer Hayes.
