Tarlton Brown was a Col. in the Revolutionary Army. He was born in 1757, moved from VA to lower South Carolina in 1769 when he was 12 years old with his family, his father who incidentally was also a Revolutionary war patriot who was killed by a gang of Tories lead by the infamous Daniel "McGirt/McGeart". Tarlton served as private South Carolina Militia,Revolutionary War in 1774. Served: Siege of Savannah,Georgia,1779.Battle of the Monk's Corner,South Carlina,1780.Commissioned Lieutenant in 1780.Married to Emelia (Amelia) Matthews in 1788. Coroner and Sheriff, Winton County, South Carolina,1788. Gristmill owner,1789. South Carolina State House Representative,1792-97.Lt. Colonel,Twenty Third Regiment,1794-1808. South Carolina State Senator 1798-99. Sheriff of Barnwell County, South Carolina,1799-1804. Second marriage to Judith O'Bannon,1804. He is the author of''Memoirs of Tarlton Brown'' published in 1862. A portrait of Tarlton hangs in the library at Barnwell, South Carolina. He is buried in an old Baptist graveyard where a church once stood on land given by himself. His tombstone is still standing and a newer marker by the Daughters of the American Revolution. His original tombstone reads ''Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord from henceforth: Yea, saith the Spirit, that they may rest from their labours; and their works do follow them.'' On Boiling Springs road go two tenths of a mile west from the intersection of Lyndhurst Road (this intersection being near Boiling Springs School House) Tarlton gave one acre of land in 1826 for a Baptist Meeting House which apperently already stood on the land where the present cememtery is located.
