The Austin American Statesman (TX) March 8, 1997 > William Joel Alsup, 94, of Austin, died Frebuary 24, 1997. Joel was preceded in death by his wife Kitty Brooks Alsup. He is survived by sister-in-law, brother-in-law, nieces, nephews, cousins, close friends Fluffy and his beloved cats. He was born October 7, 1902, near Ottine, Gonzales Co, son of Theophilus W. Alsup and Alma (Jackson) Alsup. Alsup knew and loved this area where he spent much of his youth. The family moved to Austin by wagon and team, subsequently to his early youth. Joel graduated from Austin High School in 1918 and earned his B.S. in Civil Engineering from the University of Texas in 1935. In December of 1937, Alsup was employed by the State Department of Highways and Public Transporation from which he retired in June 1968 as Supervisory Traffic Engineer IV. Traffic Operations Division, Austin Headquarters. From May of 1942 to November 1947, Alsup took a leave of absence from the Highway Department to serve in World War II. His unit, the 337th-338th Combat Engineers, with hold its 51st Reunion this August. As Allied Forces liberated Italy, Alsup served as Military Governor of several areas. At his request, there will be no funeral, and through the capable and caring offices of his niece, Ruth Ann Sulser, of San Antonio, his interment will be private. Memorials may be made to the charity of your choice, or to Ottine Cemetery Association. Route 4, Box 139, Gonzales, TX. 78629. "
Joel married Georgia Hazel Clinger on 6 June 1933 in San Marcos, Hays Co., TX. They had no children and were later divorced. On 3 June 1949 Joel married Katherine Jane Brooks at the Second Presbyterian Church, Houston, Harris Co.,TX. They also did not have any children.
Joel was my uncle whom I was very proud of. He shared many fishing adventures with me and my father, military stories of building bridges in Italy during WW II and visited me often when I was a student at Texas A & M University (1948-1952).
