Born in Lee County, Va., she was a charter member of the Poplar Grove Primitive Baptist Church in Kingsport. She was also a lifetime member of the Holston Valley Hospital Ladies Auxillary. She was a 1954 graduate of East Tennessee State University and retired from the Sullivan County School System in 1970 as a teacher. (The library at the now closed Temple Star Elementary School is named after her)
She was preceded in death by her husband, George Harrison Holmes
(he was killed in a coal mine); two sons, George (Smokey) Holmes and Wentz Holmes
; one daughter, Ruth Holmes
; three sisters and two brothers.
Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Hubert (Edalee) Robinette, Sullivan Gardens and Lenora Ferguson, Gate City, Va.; two sons, Ben Holmes and Ted Holmes, both of Kingsport; 14 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchidren; one brother, Junior Napier, Pennington Gap, Va.; one sister, Margaret Parsons, Dryden Va.; several nieces and nephews.
Calling hours are from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, at Hamlett-Dobson Funeral Home downtown and any time at the home, Rt. 10, Millcreek Rd., Kingsport.
Services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday in the funeral home chapel with Elder John Henry Sybert officiating.
Burial will be in Poplar Grove Church Cemetery.
