William Isaac Huston was known to family members as "Uncle Billy". He owned a farm in Elm Grove Township (Louisa County), Iowa. It was here all of his children were raised. Often over the years he and his wife, Margaret Frances (Jackson) Huston (married c1874) held a family reunion at their farm. In a photograph taken at one of them it shows over sixty people, with the men in their bowler hats and suits, and the women in their long skirts or dresses. Even the young children were dressed up, including the boys - many of whom also wore hats.

Billy's parents were Mahlon Martin Huston (1829-1868) and Clarissa E. Draper (1834-1908). They had six children:
Mary C. Huston
William Isaac Huston(of this memorial)
Josephine Huston (who died young)
Irvin Everett Huston
John Alexander Huston
Mary Elizabeth Huston

When Mahlon died at the young age of 38, his wife, Clarissa, had to raise their children on her own; although Billy was 13 by then, his youngest sibling (Mary Elizabeth) was not quite four years old. Sometime after 1875 Clarissa married again, to William Beauchamp who was the widower of Matilda (Waddell). He had four children of his own; his youngest was a teenager by then. Thus, the Huston and Beauchamp families were blended.

Billy's love of family showed through all of the Huston reunions he hosted. Even now, almost 90 years later, those reunions are still remembered as being something special that took place at "that big house somewhere in Iowa". Even though specifics of them dull over time, the feeling of "family" still remains. That is a wonderful legacy that William Isaac "Billy" Huston, and all of the Huston family, have given to later generations.
