Ype was born in the small country village Longerhouw in the western part of the Dutch northern province Friesland. His parents are laborer Sake Ypma, 31 years aged, and Geertje Yesma (or IJlsma).

On 30 December 1894 Ype Ypma, aged 22 years, married in Bolsward, in midwest Friesland to the five years older
Aaltje Velsen, born in Bolsward, daughter of Frederik Feikes Velsen and Aukje Johannes Cuiper.

In Bolsward they had the following children:
- Sake, born 14 September 1895;
- Aukje, born 7 January, 1897;
- Frederik, born 10 November 1898;
- Dooitse, born 12 May 1900;

The family Ypma emigrated in 1903 to the USA, firstly to Massachusetts, and then, before 1908, to Gallatin County in the southwestern part of Montana, likely in or near the Dutch settlement Holland, later on called Amsterdam-Churchill.

In 1910 Ype Ypma (37 y) lived with his wife Haltye (42 y) and their children Sake (14 y), Aukje (13 y), Frederick (11 y), Dooitse (9 y), Gurtje [7 y, born in Linwood, worchester County, Massachusetts] and Wiepkje (2 y, born in Montana) in Gallatin County, Montana.

In 1920 Ype Ypma (47 y) resided with his wife Aaltje (52 y) and their children Sako (24 y), Olga [Aukje, 22 y], Frederick (21 y), George [Dooitse, 19 y, born in Holland], Gertrude (17 y, born in Massachusetts), Winnie [born in 1908, Manhattan, Gallatin], Frank [1911, Manhattan, Gallatin] and Raymond [7 y, Manhattan, Gallatin] in Gallatin County, Montana too.

Ype died in November 1927 in Gallatin County at the age of almost 55 years. His widow Aaltje died in 1959 at the age of about 92 years.
