Robert Armstrong Mowrey came from Arkansas and settled in Gainesville, Texas. He was the son of Lewis R. and Elizabeth Lusby Mowrey b. 5 Sep 1839 in Tennessee.He was teaching at St. Joseph, west of Gainesville towards Wichita. He was boarding with the Corsey family (later lived in Gainesville) when he heard his brother, Pleasant, had joined the forces he gave up his school and joined the Confederate army. He served in Co.H. 9th Texas cavalry Ross' Brigade from 1861 to 1864.After the war, he met and married Mary A. McCorrall (married 11 Oct 1865) they some trips to Texas and back to Mississippi and Arkansas. They lived in Stevensville, Texas where their daughter May Bell was born 6 Feb 1876. Later returning to Arkansas where the lived in several places...Little Rock, Pine Bluff, Hot Springs and Fayetteville.Robert Armstrong Mowrey and Mary had six children:Robert E. Mowrey b. 17 Sep 1866 d. 13 Mar 1867William Pleasant Mowrey b. 5 Jun 1868 d. 17 May 1937Mary Elizabeth Mowrey b. 22 Feb 1871 d. 5 Jan 1959John Wightman Mowrey b. 20 Jun 1873 d. 25 Oct 1874May Bell Mowrey b. 6 Feb 1876 d. 22 Sep 1961Ruben Lamar Mowrey b. 3 Aug 1878 d. 3 May 1900William P. Mowrey married Lula Ann Haggard on 11 Sep 1898 in Gainesville, Texas. Two sons were born to this union.Mary Elizabeth Mowrey married John C. Conner 11 Sep 1887. They had six children.May Bell married Jess Howard Johnson 17 Jan 1909. They had one daughter, Mary Ruth Johnson b. 16 Aug 1917Robert Armstrong Mowrey was ordained to preach in the Methodist Church in 1882. Rev. Mowery held preaching services in Oak Grove Camp north of the Oak Grove Cemetery, and east of Woodbine. They had week long camp meetings held in a grove of trees that are still standing there. It took two weeks to travel his circuit from Altus, Arkansas to Gainesville, Texas. It is fitting that Robert Armstong Mowrey is laid to rest near the very place he held camp meetings so very often. He passed away on 7 May 1904 and is buried in the Oak Grove Cemetery in Woodbine, Cook County, Texas.
