Clem was a native of Ferdinand, Indiana, and the son of Bernard Kemper and Caroline Vonderheide. At some point after 1900 he moved to Louisville, Kentucky. On 18 Nov 1904 he married Emma C. Willman and they had four children: Ruth, Edna, Edmund and Herbert. For most of his life he was a bartender at various bars and saloons and at one time he was also the proprietor of a cafe. He died at the age of 88.
