It was reported that Richard died from multiple fragmentation wounds. His body was recovered. Richard was born on June 15th, 1949 in Scottsboro, Alabama. WASHINGTON (AP) – Two Alabama soldiers have been killed in action in Vietnam, the Pentagon said Monday. They were Pfc. Richard L. Higginbotham of Scottsboro and Pfc. Leroy Nelson of Theodore. Their deaths raise to 1,003 the unofficial tally of Alabamians killed in action in the conflict in Southeast Asia.
He served as a Corporal with Hotel Troop, 17th Cavalry, 198th Infantry Brigade, Americal Division, USARV.
He was a awarded the Purple Heart Medal for his Combat Wounds, The National Defense Service Medal, The Vietnam Service Medals and the Vietnam Campaign Medal.
