Per "An Illustrated History of Klickitat, Yakima & Kittitas Counties":

William was a farmer by trade who was born in New York to Johnathan & Julia A. (Vanlassel). Hi father was a mechanic who had served in the War of 1812.

William remained at his parents home in New York until he was 12 years old when he left the home to get work on a farm. He lived in New York for another 8 years before moving to Michigan for a year. He then moved to Wisconsin for three years and Iowa for four years.

He married Sarrah Brooks in Iowa in 1859.

In 1868 he moved to Vancouver, Washington Territory where he farmed for twenty years, moving to the Yakima Valley in 1888 to raise hops. In 1892 he moved to the Sunnyside area for four years to farm, returning to the Yakima City vicinity to farm in 1897.

William and Sarah had seven children according to the book:
Daniel H. born in Iowa on May 5, 1858
Curtis (deceased) born in Iowa on February 10, 1860
Milton, born in Wisconsin on January 29, 1861 (Curtis is buried in the Pioneer Cemetery)
Allen (deceased) born in Iowa on June 25, 1865
Clara Olive Hildreth Cook Stone born in Vancouver on January 18, 1868 (buried in Pioneer Cemetery)
Frank, born in Vancouver on August 15, 1872
Mary (deceased) born in Vancouver in 1874

William organized the first Republican club called the "Cohn C. Fremont club" in Yakima City.

William and wife Sarah were members of the Christian church.
