World War I Victoria Cross Recipient. He served as a Corporal in the 8th Infantry Battalion, Canadian Expeditionary Force. In the woods near Amiens, France, on August 9, 1918, Corporal Coppins' platoon suddenly came under enemy fire form numerous machine-guns. It was not possible to advance or retreat so Corporal Coppins, calling on four men to follow him, went forward in the face of intense machine-gun fire. He rushed straight for the guns and the four men with him were killed. He also was wounded, but going on alone, he killed the operator of the first gun plus three of the crew and took four prisoners. Despite his wound, he then continued with his platoon to the final objective. For prestigious gallantry in the face of the enemy, he was promoted Sergeant and awarded the Victoria Cross on September 27, 1918. After the war, he relocated to America, settled in California and served an enlistment at Angel's Camp Calaveras Company, during World War II.
