Charles was a son of Capt. Ned Meriwether of "Woodstock" and Eliza Sharpe. He was born on the "Woodstock" plantation in Todd County and became a noted tobacconist, coal mine superintendent and farmer. He never married.

(Note: Cave Hill Cemetery records seem to have recorded his name as "Charles Meriwether Barker", which is incorrect. His sister, Katherine Maxwell Meriwether, married Henry Stites Barker and one obituary even has his name as Barker.)
