Harry A. Chaplin, widely known among cheese men of the state and former resident of Plymouth, was killed Tuesday morning in an automobile accident near Summitville Ind.
Mr. Chaplin, supervisor of the Kraft-Phoenix plant in Summitville, was on his way to inspect a factory. Usually he was accompanied on inspection trips with Mrs. Chaplin, but was alone at the time of the accident.
With a Packard car behind him, that had started to pass his car, a green coupe dashed in between the two, sideswiped Mr. Chaplin's car and threw it directly into the path of the Packard. Mr. Chaplin was instantly killed. The driver of the green coupe sped on and not been apprehended.
From clues obtained, the authorities believe that the green coupe was driven by a gangster, who was fleeing from justice. A short time before he had crowded another car off the road.
As soon as word of the death reached the city, Harvey Chaplin departed for Summitville and, accompanied by his mother, arrived with the body last evening.
The funeral will be held at two o'clock Saturday afternoon [May 16], at the Wittkopp funeral home, where the body will lie in state from three o'clock Friday afternoon until the time of the funeral.
The masons will have charge of the services and interment will be in the Union cemetery.
At Summitville, yesterday morning, the Masons held a short prayer service before Mrs. Chaplin and son, started on their journey to Plymouth.
Mr. Chaplin was sixty-eight years of age. Sheboygan county has been his home for many years. He was a graduate of the 1880 class, the second class to be graduated from the Plymouth high school. He took up manufacture of cheese and all his life was engaged in the business.
Dec. 17, 1884, Mr. Chaplin was married to Miss Edith Swart, who with the following children survive; Erle, Waldo; Mrs. Arnie Duenk, Cedar Grove; Edgar, Corvallis, Oregon; and Harvey W. of this city. Twelve grandchildren.
