The Reverend Lester Martin Mckay is the youngest son of Captains Martin and Dora (Mason) McKay, early Salvation Army Officers. Martian rode the rails and was often called "the Minister of the rails". The family moved to Cleveland where they joined the SA.
Lester was appointed as a Lieutenant in the Salvation Army (an Assistant minister) in 1909 In 1912 he was reassigned to Tennessee. He married Elsie Amanda Smith, a direct descendant of Thomas Fox, who arrived with William Penn. On 14 April 1914 he attained his Captaincy and served in Salisbury, N. C.
He was drafted for service in WWI and served for a time as a "Donut Dolly" in France. He was released from duty because of his family's size. Returning to America the McKay's were stationed in Gadsden, Alabama . In 1920's they served in Kingsville Ohio and Rochester, New York. In the 1930's Lester served as an itinerant preacher through out the South and trumpet player for the Salvation Army Band. In the 1940's moved to Longview, Texas. In Longview he and his first wife parted ways. He became involved with the development of LeTourneau Collage - where he demonstrated his skills as a bible scholar and teacher of Hebrew, Greek and Latin. The Southern Baptist Convention recognized him as a Minister, as did the Pentecostal Church. He married the war widow Emma (Markham) Mathews, Of Campti Louisiana. They settled in Campti where Lester became a well known "circuit preacher" whose influence was felt. This was my teacher and foster grandfather - My friend. Without whom I would never have learned my heritage and become a rabbi. His sons and grandsons remain ministers in the Salvation Army and the Baptist Church. (BIO - Kuzriel Meir)
