The son of Thomas and Catharine Hornbeck Van Gaasbeck, he died of blood poisoning

Dr. A.T. Van Gaasbeck ends a long and active life

Dr. Abraham Thomas Van Gaasbeck died yesterday at the home of his daughter, Mrs. A. Morris Smart, corner of North Salina and Court streets, from blood poisoning resulting from bladder trouble. He was born on April 26th, 1811 in Ulster county. He studied at Trinty college and was graduated in medicine when quite young. Dr. Van Gaasbeck practiced his profession in Bridgeport from 1836 to 1857 and then moved to Syracuse, where he has since lived. In his younger days he took an active interest in all matters of public concern, and especially politics, always being a staunch Democrat. Fifteen years ago Doctor Van Gaasbeck retired from his professional and public life on account of his advanced years and had lived with his daughter ever since. His second wife was Miss Van Rennselaer, a cousin of the late ex-Governor Seymour's wife. Mrs. Van Gaasbeck died about ten years ago. Besides Mrs. Smart, the only surviving member of the family is another daughter, Mrs. W.H.B. Menzies of Hammond, Ind. The deceased leaves considerable property, including the Van Gaasbeck block in Lodi Street on the site where he lived for many years.
The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, the Rev. George B. Spaulding, D.D., officiating.
