Colborn Barrell was a Loyalist during the American Revolution, mainly due to his religious beliefs and his association with the Sandemanians, a religious sect founded in the United States by Scotsman Robert Sandeman in the 1760s. Colborn was also a dealer in gold and silver watches with chains, etc.
