Robert was born to Oscar Bowen and Verda Lela Howze Brett in Wayne County, Mississippi in 1917.
Robert was the oldest son of five children, he had two brothers and two sisters:

Ethel Mae b. 1915
Frances Dean b. 1921
Oscar Bowen b. 1925
Raymond Dawes b. 1927

Robert found his home in the U.S. Army in 1936 and was stationed at Ft. Sam Houston in 1941 when Pearl Harbor was bombed. In a short time he found his military unit stationed in North Africa preparing for the invasion of Italy. While in Italy Robert served as a sniper. The war left a permanent impact on his life as he recounted stories of his experiences.

In 1946 Robert married Pauline Emma "Peggy" Cannon the marriage lasted less than ten years and there were no children.

As a family member it was difficult to watch his life never reach it's full potential as a result if WWII's impact on his life. Robert was a true patriot and warrior and the family will forever be proud of his military service to the country.
