Robert Lee Foy, Jr., 91, of Scotts Hill, NC, died on Thursday, May 26, 2011 at New Hanover Regional Medical Center.

Robert was born to Robert Lee Foy and Elizabeth Abbey Dosher Foy on October 2, 1919 in the manor house at Poplar Grove Plantation, where he grew up. He graduated from Topsail High School in 1937 and then attended Oak Ridge Military Institute in Oak Ridge, NC where he received a degree in business.

Robert was a veteran, serving with the US Navy in the Pacific Theater during WW II. Upon returning from the Navy, he assisted his father with the family farm at Poplar Grove and took over the farm when his father retired. In the 1960s he started his second career at the NC State Port of Wilmington, and retired after 20 years of service.

Robert was active in his local community, having served as a member of the Pender County School Board, Director of the local blueberry farm co-op, treasurer of Wesleyan Chapel United Methodist Church for 25 years, member of the Cemetery Committee of Wesleyan Chapel, and served for more than 25 years on the board of directors for Poplar Grove Plantation where he also was an active volunteer. He was a lifelong member of Wesleyan Chapel UMC and was a benefactor of both Wesleyan Chapel and Scotts Hill Baptist Church. In 2003 Robert was awarded the Order of the Long Leaf Pine, the highest civilian honor that can be granted in NC, for his work with the NC Department of Transportation. Robert was sought out for his knowledge as an "Old Timer" of the Scotts Hill area and was proud to share his stories with others. His greatest joy in his later years was meeting people at the Abbey Nature Preserve at Poplar Grove, which he and his family established with the NC Coastal Land Trust in memory of his daughter, Margaret Abbey Foy Moore.

Robert was preceded in death by his wife, Madeline Lascor Foy; a daughter, Margaret Abbey Foy Moore; two sisters, Abbey Foy Anger and Theresa Foy Hall; and a great grandson, Chase Smith. He is survived by a daughter, Elizabeth Foy Taylor (James Taylor); a son, Robert Lee Foy III (Tuulli Foy); son in law, David Moore; and a sister, Mary Frances Foy Sanders (Robert Sanders), all of Scotts Hill. He is also survived by six grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.

A funeral service will be held on Sunday, May 29, 2011 at 2:00pm at Wesleyan Chapel United Methodist Church in Scotts Hill, with burial immediately following in the church cemetery. Pallbearers will be Jimmy Taylor, David Moore, John H. Brunjes, Steve Dunn, and Forest Hall.
