Don was born to John and Thelma (nee O'Neal) Hartman. His first wife was his high school sweetheart, Sharon L. Black, with whom he had a son, Bryan Ray (Hartman) Leach. Second wife was Dana Higgins. Third wife was Delita (Dee) Strahan. Tonya Berkery was his partner when he passed away at home on July 25, 2010.

He served in the US Coast Guard during the Vietman War, rank of EN3.

At the time of his death he was co-founder, co-owner and Vice-President of Newhart Services in Pasadena, Texas.

He is survived by his father, John Sr., son, Bryan, brother, John Jr. (Edith) all of Houston and sister, Brenda (Donald) Arndt of Wisconsin. Also many other relatives.

He was pre-deceased by his mother, Thelma, sister, Patricia Smith and brother, Rickey.

My brother was the jokester in the family. Along with brother, John. Jr., who he convinced to help, would sometimes dress up in mom's dresses and put on a comedy act. He kept the family laughing through trying times.
