Enoch Jewett Is Near Death
Widely Known Pioneer in the Shadow at His Forestville Home Came Here Years Ago

"The many Santa Rosa friends of Enoch Jewett, the widely known Forestvllle pioneer, will regret to learn that he is In the shadow of death. In response to a telegram as to their father's condition, Frank W. Jewett and E. L. Jewett, sons, came up from San Francisco last night and went over to the old homestead at Forestville. Mr. Jewett recently celebrated his eighty-eighth birthday. For over half a century he has been a resident of Sonoma county and one who never let an opportunity pass to speak of its resources and advantages."

Death Calls Well Known Pioneer Enoch Jewett of Forestville Dies at the Age of Eighty-Eight Years Yesterday Morning

"When death called George Enoch Jewett, the well known Forestville pioneer yesterday morning, there passed from earth a man who was widely known and universally respected. He was truly one of the pioneers and did much to build up the section in which his home was located for many years. Mr. Jewett was prominently identified with the fruit growing and farming interests of the Forestville district and in many other ways assisted in development. Many old time readers of the Press Democrat will remember Mr. Jewett's articles telling of the progress of Forestville and other matters of Interest which were written by him and published in this paper for twenty years and more under the signature of Enoch. Not long since Mr. Jewett celebrated his eighty-eighth birthday, and on that memorable occasion when relatives and friends gathered at the reunion it was feared that possibly it might be the last birthday gathering and that the silver cord binding one dear to all would be loosed as far as earthly circles were concerned, before another anniversary. For many days prior to the coming of the silent messenger Mr. Jewett had been in the shadow of death, most of the time semi-unconscious. When the end came peacefully yesterday morning there were gathered about the bedside those near and dear to him. The deceased was a man of strong convictions and pleasing personality. He erred always on the side of right and always stood for what he believed to be best. He was a life-long Democrat and took much Interest in things political for many years. And now that his long and eventful life Is ended there are to be found very many friends who join in the wish that he may rest in peace in the assurances of a blessed hereafter in the brighter and better world. On Sunday afternoon the funeral will take place from the residence at Forestville at two o'clock. Many of the pioneers will be present to honor the memory of one of their number in Sonoma county. Mr. Jewett was born in Mentor, Lake county, Ohio, on February in 1820. He was studying medicine at the time of the breaking out of the gold excitement In California. He came to the state in 1840. On December 22, 1862, he was married in Petaluma to Miss Mary Augusta Dallman, and they lived on a farm near that town for several years. He was a Christian man and was a devoted member of the Methodist Episcopal Church, and of the Odd Fellows. Under the auspices of the latter fraternity the funeral is to take place. He is survived by his wife, Mary A. Jewett, and these children: George A. and David Jewett of Des Moines, Iowa; Mrs. Mary Lawrence of Santa Rosa, Frank Jewett of Berkeley, Enoch L, Jewett of San Francisco, Mrs. Emma Clark, Mrs. Ida Silk, John E. and Carl Jewett of Forestville. He is also survived by a number of grandchildren."
