Harry Curtis Bates – 51, Greens Creek. After a short but courageous battle with cancer, Curtis passed away peacefully, with his loving family by his side, on Wednesday, July 14, 2010, in Colchester Regional Hospital. Born September 13, 1958, in Truro, he was the son of Fern Earline Bates (Collins), Greens Creek, and the late Harry McNeil Bates.

Curtis was a dedicated and loyal employee of the Holiday Inn, Truro (Keddy's) for 26 years. He received his training in cooking at the CRVS and later received his Interprovincial Journeyman papers. He loved cooking, gardening, campfires, taking pictures and being at the beach. He had a deep love for his family and "Mreow", his furry feline friend. He loved life, family, friends and good times of laughter and fun. He was an honorary "Newfie" and loved his travels to Newfoundland, often listening to Newfie music while tinkering in the shed and around home.

Along with his Mum, Fern, Curtis leaves behind his loving wife of 25 years, Melanie (Janes); son, Matthew, at home; brothers; Glendon (Joanne), Greens Creek; Karl, Truro; Robert, Greens Creek; his only and favorite sister and friend, Kelley Bates (John "George" Canning), Greens Creek; mom-in-law, Iris Janes, Truro; brothers-in law, Colin (Jill) Janes, Trevor Janes (Ruth Pauley), all of North River; sisters-in-law, Sally-Jo Janes, Drucie Janes and Christine Janes (MacIntyre), all of Truro; nieces, Chelsea Bates, Natalie, Heidi & Justine Janes; nephews, Patrick Bates & Johnathan Janes; great nephew, Terran Janes; great niece Olivia Cavicchi; several aunts, uncles and cousins. Along with his father, he was predeceased by his daughter, Sarah; father-in-law, Det. John Janes; sister-in-law, Bonnie; grandparents, Dick Collins, Elma Henderson, Ruth & Charles Bates Sr. and his feline friend "Tootie".

Arrangements have been entrusted to Mattatall ~ Varner Funeral Home, 55 Young Street, Truro, where Curtis' family will receive friends from 6-9 p.m., Saturday, July 17, 2010. "Courage does not mean that we do not know fear;
Rather that we carry on in spite of being afraid.
Courage does not always roar, or never shed a tear;
It lets us face life without allowing hope to fade."
