George F. "Bud" "Buddy" Powers Jr., a retired lieutenant colonel, 66, of Waynesboro, PA, died Wednesday, Aug. 5, 2009, in the Waynesboro Hospital, following a long illness.

He was born on Nov. 23, 1942, in Boston, MA, a son of the late George F. Powers, Sr. & Elvera M. (Kraft) Powers. He grew up in the Dorchester and Mattapan sections of Boston.
He graduated with a bachelor of science degree in business administration from Northeastern University in Boston. He also was an ROTC Distinguished Military graduate. Mr. Powers did his post-graduate studies at the George Washington University in Washington, D.C.

He and his wife, M. Elizabeth "Betty" (Morris) Powers, were married on Sept. 9, 1967, in Heidelberg, Germany.

Mr. Powers was a veteran of the Vietnam War and served in the United States Army from 1965 through 1990. He was stationed in Fort Gordon, GA.; France; Heidelberg, Germany; Vietnam; Fort Monmouth, NJ; Fort Huachuca, AZ; master instructor at Keesler Air Force Base in Biloxi, MS; Fort Ritchie, Cascade, MD, where he served as an assistant inspector general for the 7th Signal Command; commander for the U.S. Army Information Systems Command-Site R (now 1111th Signal Battalion); and was an executive officer for the 1107th Signal Brigade.

He was the recipient of numerous awards and medals: Legion of Merit, Bronze Star Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Joint Service Commendation Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Air Force Commendation Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal with five Battle Stars, Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross, Bronze Signal Corps Regimental Medal and numerous unit citations.

During his college years, he was employed with Merrill Lynch in Boston. After his retirement from the military, he worked for Booz-Allen and Hamilton law firm in Falls Church, VA, as a civil service employee at Fort Ritchie, and was also a partner with Netconn Solutions Corporation in Hagerstown, MD.

Mr. Powers was a member of the St. Andrew Catholic Church in Waynesboro; Knights of Columbus Council 2068 of Waynesboro, where he was a 3rd Degree; Knights of Columbus Fr. F.C. Noel Assembly 924, where he was a 4th Degree; BPO Elks Lodge 731, Waynesboro; Military Officers Association of America; Waynesboro Country Club; national AARP; Catoctin Chapter AARP, Fort Ritchie, where he was past president; Armed Forces Communications-Electronics Association; and served as president of Catholic parish councils at Fort Huachuca, Our Lady of the Lakes Parish at Fort Ritchie and St. Andrew Catholic Church. He served as lay Eucharistic minister at Fort Ritchie and St. Andrew Catholic Church. He also was a former member of the Fort Ritchie Catholic Choir.

He enjoyed collecting stamps, fishing, bowling, square dancing, playing ice hockey, baseball, basketball, golf and racquetball. He was an avid traveler, having traveled to Europe, Asia, Australia and 39 states within the United States.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by two daughters, Karen E. (husband, Richie) Davis & Noelle Marie Powers, all of Waynesboro; four grandchildren, Taylor Davis, Cal Davis, Brooke Davis, & Nikki Davis; sister, Catherine M. Currier, South Attleboro, MA, and a number of nieces and nephews.

A Mass of Christian Burial was offered Monday, Aug. 10, 2009, in the St. Andrew Catholic Church, Waynesboro, with Father John Bateman as celebrant. Burial followed in the St. Andrew Catholic Cemetery, Waynesboro.
