Charlie was born in Bristow, Oklahoma on November 25, 1922 and passed from this life on December 7, 1995.

He was the oldest son and third child born to Clarence Nathaniel and Ethel Irene (Williams) Mitchell. He attended the Iron Post Elementary School and Gypsy High School, where he excelled at basketball and baseball and received scholarships for both sports and academics.

In June 1941, he enlisted in the armed services and served in the Army Air Corps in World War II where he rose to the rank of Sergeant and was stationed in Florida and the Aleutian Islands. During his time in the Army Air Corps, he served as a combat engineer building forward air bases. During his service he suffered a severe back injury, which left him with life-long back trouble, when a piece of heavy equipment fell on him while he was repairing a landing field.

It was while he was in the Army and stationed in Florida that he met and married my mother, who was in the Women's Army Corps at the time and who survives him. They met and married within 6 weeks of first setting eyes on each other and remained married until his death, over 50 years later.

He was the father of two daughters and three sons -- all three of whom also served their country in military service, grandfather of 6, and great-grandfather of many. He was a caring father and hard-working provider, who for many years worked two jobs to provide for his family.

I have many cherished memories of Papa...flying kites and later u-controlled airplanes, and helping me to make a cutting board for Momma, for although he was a traditionalist, he believed "my girls should know how to use power tools too!" My dearest memory is of him pulling out a shotgun and starting to clean it in front of a boy who came to pick me up for a date "to be sure he understood how things were". Incredibly embarrassing at the time and now a treasured memory of a father's love.

He loved to watch baseball and many were the times you could find him dozing peacefully in his recliner with a game on the television after a hard week's work. Many times I would lie on the sofa reading a book, listening to the dulcet tones of the game's announcer with the drone of cicadas and the scent of lilacs drifting through the windows and slip off to sleep as well, safe in the presence of my father.

After leaving the Army in 1945, he ran his own service station in Oklahoma before starting to work for Phillips Petroleum Company. He was transferred to the Kansas City area in 1949 where, after 36 years of loyal employment, he retired from the company as a Pump Mechanic 1st Class in 1982.

In 1984, he suffered a stroke that left him mildly incapacitated. He and Momma then moved to Washington state, where they lived in a cozy home situated near my brother's place. He lived there in peace and happiness until his death.

He was preceded in death by his beloved father and mother, his much-loved step-mother Goldie Lee (Southworth) Mitchell, and his loving sister, Margaret Bell (Mitchell) Fowler. He was followed in death by his dear sister, Lucy Oweta Mitchell, in 2004.

He is survived by his cherished wife, and all of his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, his brother, and several nieces and nephews.

He is sorely missed by all of his loved ones.
