John Robert Nero, 82, of Cedar Falls, died Saturday, May 28, 2011 at his home. He was born October 10, 1928 in Bottineau, North Dakota, the son of Charles W. and Mary D. (Boehnke) Nero. John graduated from Dakota College at Bottineau. He married Doris Gauger April 19, 1954 at Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin. John received his BA and MA degrees from the University of Northern Iowa and was a teacher for 8 years and school Counselor for 23 years, in the Cedar Falls School system, retiring in 1988. He was a veteran of the United States Army, serving during the latter part of World War II and the Korean Conflict. John's body was donated to the Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minnesota.

John is survived by his wife, Doris of Cedar Falls; one son Thomas John Nero of Kansas City, Missouri and one daughter, Kathleen Anne (Gary) Grauerholz of Marshalltown; four grandchildren, Jana (Rick) Morgan, Wade (Jayna) Grauerholz, John Nero, and Mary Nero. He was preceded in death by parents and two sisters, Irene Schleicher and Virginia Burke.

Memorial services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday, June 2, 2011 at St. John Lutheran Church with inurnment at a later date at Oak Creek Cemetery at Bottineau, North Dakota. Visitation will be 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. Wednesday, June 1, 2011 at Dahl-Van Hove-Schoof Funeral Home. Memorials may be directed to Cedar Falls Community Schools Foundation and St. John Lutheran Church.
