Walter was born to William (Willie) Eugene Campbell and DeEtte Millard Campbell who were married in Koshkonong, Jefferson, Wisconsin on 26 Dec 1874. He had an older sister Sara who was born in 1876 and was about 4 years older than Walter. He also had a younger brother Bert born in 1889 whom he may never have known. Walter was close to his mother DeEtte and sister Sara. It is through Sara’s family that the story is told that Walter ran away from home at the age of abt 13 “after one too many beatings” and his family never saw or heard from him again. Only when their great grandchildren connected did Sara’s family learn that Walter had grown to adulthood and had a family of his own. Sara and mother DeEtte had feared he probably died jumping trains as was common then.

Walter lied about his age in order to serve in Teddy Roosevelt’s Rough Riders. He was very tall, over six feet. He was probably born in 1880 as a Nebraska census shows. On the 1917 US WWI Draft Registration, Walter wrote his birth date as 31 Aug 1876, and his gravestone says 1873, before his parents were even together.

Walter married Jessie Mae Snell on 14 Jul 1905 at Helena, Montana. They had 5 children: Mabel, DeEtte, William, Roy, and Grace. They later divorced in 1834.
