Dr. Andrew R. G. Smith, for a long time a physician in North Whitefield, Maine, and whose practice extended widely around in other towns, passed away Feb. 2, at his home. Two children, a son Harold R. Smith, a lawyer, and a daughter, Mrs. Louise Sukeforth, both of Coopers Mills, and five grandchildren mourn his loss. The funeral was held at the village church.

He was born May 2, 1841 at North Bridgton. His father, Perley D. Smith, was a school teacher, land surveyor and farmer and had a taste for literature and for the culture it would give. His mother, Mrs. Louise B. Smith, was also very fond of books and especially enjoyed poetry and had good ability as a writer of it herself.

In 1846, when the doctor was five years of age, his father died, after a short illness a widow and four young children surviving, the oldest 10 years and the youngest 14 months of age. She did not leave the farm as some persons would have been inclined to do under such circumstances, but she remained there to train up and educate her four boys, feeling that no better place could be found for them to acquire industrious and useful habits. Andrew, as well as the others, had an experience of hard work. He graduated from Bridgton Academy in 1859 and from Bowdoin College in 1863, being remembered there by his fellow students as a genial, energetic and forceful young man and as having good capacity as a scholar.

He was very successful as a teacher, but decided upon the medical profession. In December 1863 he enlisted in the 2d Me. Cav., and was at once appointed hospital steward. He afterwards served as assistant surgeon. After being mustered out with his regiment in December 1865, he again engaged in teaching for awhile; and finally decided to locate in North Whitefield where his life work as a physician was for all these years, where he loved and labored among the people, and where they greatly valued his faithful service.

All the doctor's brothers were in the army, in Maine regiments in the Civil War; the eldest as chaplain of the 29th Me. Reg, the next brother, Henry S as assistant surgeon in the 32nd Regiment, and the youngest brother as private to the 2nd Me. Cav., with his brother Andrew.

Doctor Smith was a member of the Maine House of Representatives and later in the Senate for two terms. He was a member of the Governor's Council for two terms.

His eldest and only surviving brother Rev. Isaiah P. Smith, and the latter's son, Percy D. Smith, a lawyer, both from Lawrence Mass, were present.
