A 66-year old Olney man was killed in an oil field accident near Newton Thursday morning.

Kelly Richie was crushed to death when a boom truck overturned after a cable pulled loose on a drilling rig. Jasper County Coroner, Darrel Holland said Richie and two other men were operating a spudder on an oil lease on property owned by William Menke. Holland said a spudder is used to pull pipe out of the well, and is a boom mounted on a truck. Guy wires are used to stabilize the truck and apparently one of the wires pulled loose causing the truck to overturn on Richie. Richie and Forest Kidwell, 50, Olney were pinned under the truck. Holland said Kidwell managed to extricate himself and was taken to Richland Memorial Hospital. He was transferred to St. Johns Hospital in Springfield. Eddie Michl Jr. the third man operating the spudder was not injured.

Holland said Richie was pronounced dead at the scene. Richie was employed by the Parrish Oil Drilling Co. of Olney and was working on a producing oil well at the time of the accident late Thursday morning.

Services for Mr. Richie held at Summers Funeral Home with Father Richard Pugliese presiding. Burial in Crest Haven Cemetery.

He was born in Davenport, Ok. January 3, 1915 to William and Malissa (Combs) Richie. He married Doris Gardner November 6, 1939 and she survives. He was a member of the Davenport Calvary Baptist Church and the Olney Eagles.

Survivors include four daughters, Mrs. Vicki Gaede and Malissa Marshall both of Olney, Mrs. Debra Beal, Iowa City, Iowa and Wanda Waggoner, Claremont; a sister; and eight grandchildren.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Kelly Sue Richie.
