Karen A. Johnson,64, a research oncologist with the National Cancer Institute, died August 19 of ovarian cancer at Washington Hospital Center.

Dr.Johnson, a long time Bethesda resident, spent more than twenty years with NCI, an agency of the National Institutes of Health.

She specialized in cancer survival rates and had been chief of the breast and gynecologigic cancer research group since 1999.

Karen Audrey Johnson was born in Chestertown, MD., and she received a bachelor's degree in chemistry from Washington College in Chestertown in 1968. In 1972, she received a doctorate in chemistry from the University of Delaware.

She was a research chemist for DuPont in Wilmington,Del., before entering medical school at Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia, from which she graduated in 1981. She received a master's degree in public health from John Hopkins University in 1995.

Dr.Johnson first went to work for NCI in 1986. She left after two years to join Georgetown University's Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center, where she was a research oncologist and assistant professor in the late 1980's and early 1990's.

From 1991 to 1996, she was a program director in NCI's Community Oncology and Rehabilitation Branch. Then she was a medical reviewer for the Food and Drug Administration from 1996 to 1998. when she returned again to NCI.

She was co-author of two books and received the 1993 NIH Award of Merit and many other academic and professional honors.

Survivors include two brothers.
