The Charlotte News, June 18, 1949:
He Believes in ‘Em
Father of Year Big Family Man

The old woman who lived in the shoe had nothing on one of Charlotte’s more productive fathers. Ernest J. Stogner, a 75-year-old Chadbourn Mills area resident, has so many children he finds it hard to recall all their names. In 56 years of married life, he has fathered 24 children; fourteen girls and ten boys. The boys all took after him, becoming carpenters. The girls got married. His first child came when he was 19; his last, at 63. Today, he lives with his second wife who is the mother of ten (three boys, seven girls) at 154 Carolina Ave. He and some of his carpenter sons constructed the small, one-floor dwelling three years ago. Father’s Day for Mr. Stogner will be a little anti-climatic. His real day comes on May 16, his birthday. This is when his sons and daughters, grandsons and granddaughters and even a few great-grandchildren gather. Even Mr. Stogner has no idea how many grandchildren he has, but the family get-togethers often approach the 100 mark in attendance.
