John (Johann) was born in the small village of Nesuses in the town of what is now Freigericht in the Main-Kinzig district of Hesse. Immigrants in the 1850's identified this area as "Kur-Hesse." John, along with his mother and siblings, left Bremen, Germany, in April of 1854 and arrived in Baltimore on 16 May 1854. From there, his family traveled to Cincinnati, Ohio, where they resided for a short time. They eventually made their way to Brookville, Indiana, where they made their home. Little is know of John's father; the family story that circulate was that he died on the ship on the way to America - though there is no record on the manifest of a death during the passage. It is believed his name was also John (Johann). John's mother was Katharina Dornhecker, also from the village of Neuses. She died in Brookville, Indiana, and is buried
