Martha Taylor Adams was born in about 1855 to a farmer and his wife in rural Sangamon County Illinois. Dr. R.E.W. Adams was the attending physican. It apears that her Mother died at her birth and Dr. Adams offered to take the baby home with him for his wife Pheobe to care for. After nearly a year the farmer who had recently remarried came to Dr. Adams and asked for his daughter back. By this time Pheobe had become very attached to the child so Dr. Adams refused to return her to her father and was able to secure guardianship. Martha lived with and was educated by Dr. Adams and Pheobe until the Dr's passing in 1869. Martha stayed with Pheobe and later became a teacher. Martha was married to Charles Rittenhouse in 1882 and bore him seven children before her death in 1896. Her adopted Mother Pheobe continued to live in the Rittenhouse household to help with the children until her own death in 1899.
