A funeral service is scheduled at 10 a.m. Monday, October 28, 2019 at Autry Funeral Home Chapel in Jacksonville. Visitation will begin at 9 a.m. Rev. Doug Wintermute and Jimmy Reese will officiate. Mr. Hines will be laid to rest at Resthaven Memorial Park in Jacksonville.
James grew up in Leon County, Texas. Mr. Hines served in the U.S. Navy Air Corps during World War II as a Torpedo Bomber Pilot on the carrier, The Fanshaw Bay. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross during the battle of Okinawa James married the love of his life Birdie Hendry in 1950. James received a Bachelor’s degree from Sam Houston State University and a Master of Education degree from Stephen F. Austin State University. Before teaching, he worked for oil companies in Venezuela and Texas. Mr. Hines taught typing and accounting at J.H.S. for over 30 years and then retired in 1990. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Jacksonville where he taught the Alpha-Omega Sunday school class.
He was preceded in death by his parents, James and Mabel Hines; sister, Kay Jarvis and a nephew, Jim Jarvis.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife Birdie Hendry Hines of Jacksonville; daughter, Holli Durrett Walker and husband Don of Jacksonville, his grandchildren, Jim Harris Durrett, M.D. and wife Marnelle, and Dusti Durrett Beall and husband Rob; great-grandchildren Robbie Beall, Sammy Beall, Andi Beall, Harris Durrett and Saundi Durrett; and nephew, Andy Jarvis.
Honorary pallbearers will be John Mark Lester, Matt Lester, Richard Slawson, Joe Ballard and Dirk Sheridan.
