Thomas Ashe Gatewood was the fifth of ten children born to Samuel B. Gatewood (1834-1919) and his wife Nancy Hooker Covington (1840-1917). One of the maddening problems with the children of Samuel and Nancy Gatewood is their often wildly contradictory birth dates as recorded in various federal censuses, death certificates and grave markers. Thomas's death certificate states that he was born on March 4, 1864 while his grave marker gives the date as April 6, 1864. However, the 1900 Federal Census notes his birth in March 1870, and he is listed as only one year old in the 1870 Census. In the absence of other evidence, 1870 seems the more probable year of birth.

Thomas descended from some of the founding families of the county. Raised on his father's farm on the Morven Rd. in Anson Co., Thomas never married. He worked on the family farms and lived with his parents until their deaths. Afterwards, he shared the family house with his unmarried sisters Nannie and Lillie Gatewood.
