ED MULLIGAN Dies At 84. - John Edward Mulligan, Sr. died last Friday afternoon 1:15 o'clock at his home in Grand Marais, after an illness of several weeks. He would have been 84 had he lived until yesterday. Funeral services were conducted at the First Congregational Church Tuesday afternoon with Rev. S. P. Symonds in charge. Norris Downing was at the organ. He played The Lord's Prayer and a group of hymns. Burial was in Poplar Grove cemetery.

Pallbearers were Harry Flaherty, Tom Allard, Tom Hussey, F. C. Hussey, Tumsey Johnson and Walter Rowser. Honorary pallbearers were Charles J. Anderson, Arthur Johnson, Peter Allard, Arnold Erickson Homer Massie and H. T. Stickney.

Attending the funeral from out of town were: Dr. and Mrs. C.E Sisler, Grand Rapids, Minn.; Mrs. Phoebe Swenson, Babbit (the ladies being sisters of Mrs. Mulligan); Mr. and Mrs. Walter Rowser, Silver Bay. People from all parts of the county attended the last rites.

Mr. Mulligan was born at Marion, Wisc., August 8, 1872, and his early years found an interest in surveying which he held throughout his entire life. He made original surveys in much of northern Minnesota, and in 1910 joined the United States Forest Service and came to Cook County as one of the first forest rangers at Schroeder and Lutsen. He supervised the building of the first forestry cabins and fire towers throughout the district.

In 1911 he was married to Grace Mills of Remer, Minnesota, and they first lived at Schroeder. The next spring Mr. Mulligan built a cabin of hewed timbers north of Lutsen, and because they were still newlyweds the road to the cabin was called the honeymoon trail. The name sticks to this day. He also named many of the lakes in the county for members of his family and those of his wife. He gave other names to other lakes, such as the group known as Ed's Vegetable Garden, north of Greenwood Lake.

When their first child was born, the Mulligans moved to the shore at Lutsen and lived near the C. A. A. Nelsons. In 1918 they moved to Grand Marais, where Mr. Mulligan continued his forestry work until he retired in 1936. He was state scaler and county surveyor until two years ago.

He is survived by his wife, Grace, 5 children, Mrs. John (Lowella) Twiest, Mrs. John (Olva) Crouch. Dubuque, Iowa; Mrs. Joe (Phoebe) Walsh, Albuquerque, NM; John E. and William R.: 16 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren. Cook County (MN) News-Herald - August 9, 1956
