John R Morley, one of The Bahamas' most prominent businessmen, died at his home on the Montagu Foreshore July 19, 2005. His funeral was held at St. Matthew's Anglican Church on Saturday 23 July at 4 p.m.

In 1965, the real estate partnership of Morley and O'Brien was formed; the company later merged with another leading real estate company, McPherson and Brown, to form Real Estate Sales and Rentals (Bahamas) Ltd., which invested in New Providence, and the Family Islands. He excelled at commercial property management and forged a partnership in The Mall at Marathon, and developed other properties including Norfolk House, Independence Shopping Center and Green Shutters in New Providence. Mr Morley was also President of the Bahamas Real Estate Association from 1978 to 1980, continuing on the Board of Directors from 1975-1991.

From 1975-1977, he served as President of the Bahamas Chamber of Commerce, and was instrumental in initiating the joint International Chamber Relations Programme (ICRP) between The Bahamas and the Coral Gables Chamber. John was the Chamber's Business Person of the Year in 1999.

Free National Movement leader Tommy Turnquest called him an important part of the party's Finance Committee, who assisted in the upkeep and programmes of the party for the past 35 years, and helped secure the party's victory in 1992.

He was regarded as an "outstanding" Rotarian and supported many local groups and charities such as the Salvation Army, Bahamas Air Sea Rescue Association (BASRA), the Bahamas National Trust and the Bahamas Historical Society. He was also president of the St. Andrew's Society, a charitable organisation that his grandfather, the Reverend Richardson Saunders had supported for decades.
