He was born to James H. Preston & Silence Chamberlain. Around 1835 his parents & family moved to Indiana; around 1840 the family moved to St. Louis, Missouri; they then moved to Morgan County Illinois around 1843 & he moved to Greene County Illinios around 1858. He married Margaret Ruyle daughter of John Leroy Ruyle & Anna Gilpin on the banks of the Missisppi River 7 May 1848 at Pike County, Missouri. They were married 41 years had 16 children before this marriage ended in divorce. The children were unkown infant; James Woodmancy; Gabriel; Silence Ann who married William Medlock; John Wesley who married Rachel Fanning; unknown infant; Joseph A. who married Sally Fanning; William Randolph who married Barbara Fanning; Margaret Elizabeth who married Francisco "Frank" Kehl; Charles Edward who married Bertha M. last name unknown; Sarah Amanda married Phil Becker; Thomas Benjamin who married Ollie May Orris; Wesley Ervin (Earven) who married Lillie Adams & then Mabel Reasor; Emma died in infancy; Rachel Elizabeth; unknonw infant. James was an Engineer on the Mississipi River for 15 years; a riverboat Captain; & a farmer. He was in Civil War Co A 101st Il Vol Inf. from 9 August 1862 to 12 September 1864; mustered out due to wounds recieved Battle of Peach Tree in Georgia.
