Boatwright was attending the U.S
Military Academy at West Point and he
resigned a Cadet-ship there. On returning
from West Point he was Commissioned First
Lieutenant of Company G, Second South
Carolina Infantry Regiment. Here he served
with distinction and was promoted to Captain.
In 1872 he settled in Wilmington, NC from
which city his Mother, Mrs. Mary Lord
Boatwright had come. He was highly
successful as a merchant.
He married during the War to Miss Annie
Pendleton Taliaferro of Orange, VA.
