ELDER A.F.BATEMAN

Elder Albert Franklin Bateman died at his home in Cedarville, N.J., on January 18, after an unusually long and useful life, having touched many milestones. The impress of his life will always be recognized, in business a man of integrity, in social life most welcome and interesting, and in the moral welfare of his native place; he was one of the most active for temperance and purity in social life, as a Christian, one who sought to follow the "Golden Rule", and humbly follow his Master to whom he gave his heart and life in the early years of young manhood.

He was the son of Elder Jasper and Barbara (Shimp) Bateman, born at Cedarville on December 4, 1828. He married Miss Mary Jane Parvin, who lived a beautiful and devoted life as a wife, mother and Christian, and after celebrating their fiftieth anniversary, she died on February 22, 1901, leaving eight children and a devoted husband to mourn her loss.

Mr. Bateman united with the First Presbyterian Church of Cedarville, N.J. on February 24, 1866 and was elected Elder of the First Church on December 31, 1870 and was ordained and installed in 1871, serving as Elder for several years with his father, and then until his death, a service of forty-two years.

Elder A.F. Bateman was loved by all and his love for home and friends, and especially Christian fellowship, marked him as a man of sterling work in his daily work and walk and earnest service. His unique personality was a feature of his life and many hearts are made sad because we shall see his face here no more. The first break in the family chain, after losing his wife, was the death of his daughter, Mrs. William Sheppard, of Cedarville, on September 3, 1912.

On March 1, 1902, he married Miss Annie Williams Kemp, of Delaware, whose devotion and Christian character endeared her to the entire family. She now survives him with his seven children--Wilbert F. Bateman, of Dias Creek; Mrs. Howard F. Connor, of Fairton; Mrs. James Wainwright, of Cedarville; Mrs. James Cox, of Cape May; Mrs. Samuel Foster, of Elmer; Ephriam Bateman, of Neward, and Mrs. Lewis F. Sheppard, of Cedarville.

The funeral service will be held this Tuesday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock, at his late residence in Cedarville. His body will be laid at rest in the family plot in the Brick Church Cemetery, connected with the First Presbyterian Church of Cedarville.
