Donald was born February 9, 1920 to Samuel and Vera Burton VanHooser in Woodward, OK. He was raised and attended schools in Amarillo, TX and graduated from Amarillo Junior College in 1940 with an Associate's Degree. On July 20, 1941 he married Laurene Ludden in Amarillo.

Serving in the U.S. Army with Company L, 260th Infantry from 1944 to 1946, Donald had tours in France, Belgium, Germany and Austria. His decorations included WWII Victory Ribbon, EAME Theater Ribbon, two Bronze Service Stars, Combat Infantry Badge and a Bronze Star.

Continuing his education, he took credit courses with the University of Oklahoma and the Oklahoma City University and received a Bachelor's Degree in 1964. Donald and his family lived in Hawaii for eleven years and then in 1979 moved from Belleville, IL to Clyde, TX.

He was a member of the Golden K Kiwanis Club in Clyde, a past member of Friends of Clyde Public Library, a past president of the National 65th Infantry Division Association of World War II, a lifetime member of Veterans of Foreign Wars, and a member of the Presbyterian church.

Preceding him in death are his parents and two grandchildren, James David Prince and Keith Clifton Prince.

Survivors include his wife of 69 years, Laurene VanHooser of Abilene; one son Curtis Don VanHooser of Johnson City , TN; two daughters Karen Prince of Bella Vista, Arkansas and Sallye Heintz of Bluff Dale, TX; and one sister Mary Frances Benton of Dallas, TX.
