Peter James Apollo, 51, died March 1, 2000, at his home in Fairbanks. A memorial Mass was held at St. Aloysius Gonzage Church, 5608 N. Magnolia Ave., St. Louis.

Mr. Apollo was born Nov. 5, 1948, in St. Louis. An Alaska resident for the past eight years, he had worked for the state of Alaska in the Department of Community and Economic Development, Municipal and Regional Assistance Division. He traveled to many of the villages in his job as a local government specialist. His family wrote: ''... (He) enjoyed the outdoors and often spoke of how much he enjoyed the people, the fishing and the hunting. ... Pete often said that he loved his job working with people in the villages and helping them. He said it was a privilege to travel out to the villages, and he would have taken the job and done it for nothing. The family added that he loved his work and that this period was the happiest of his life. Mr. Apollo was preceded in death by his father, Carl Apollo Sr.

He is survived by his children, Anne Marie and John Apollo; close friend, Irene Catalone; mother, Virginia Apollo; sisters and brothers-in-law, Sylvia and Martinn, and Carol and Tony; brother and sister-in-law, Carl and Kathy; nieces and nephews, Jesse, Melissa, Jason, Ginnie, Tony, Kris, Kim, Carl, Stephanie and Daniel; and many cousins and friends. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that donations in Mr. Apollo's name be made to the American Diabetes Association or the Kidney Foundation.
