Aeppli, Alfred age 79, passed away on September 14, 2008 after a long and courageous fight against cancer.

Alfred was born and raised in Zürich, Switzerland, where he finished his formal education with a PhD in mathematics. He accepted a position as instructor at Cornell University in 1957, moving his young family to Ithaca, NY and later to St. Paul, where he taught for 37 years at the School of Mathematics at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis. He was a member of Macalester-Plymouth Church, where he served as Elder and found relaxation by singing in the choir. Up to the final months of his life, Alfred worked tirelessly for peace and justice, culminating in a resolution concerning world peace ratified this June (2008) by the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church.

Preceded in death by his youngest son, Jacob, survived by his wife, Dorothee of 53 years; his brother, Ueli and sister, Greth, both of Zürich; his sons, Gabriel (Yeong-Ah) of London, England and Andreas (Lisa) and grandsons, Alexander and Clemens of Watertown, Massachusetts.

His dedication to the issues that were important to him was inspiring and will be missed.

A memorial service will be held at Macalester-Plymouth United Church, 1658 Lincoln Ave, St Paul, on Saturday, September 20, at 5:00 p.m., with visitation starting at 4:30 pm.
