US Congressman, US Senator. He was elected as a Republican to first represent New York's 27th Congressional District, then the 28th Congressional District in the United States House of Representatives, serving from 1873 to 1877. He was then elected as a Republican Senator from New York to the United States Senate, and served only a few months in 1881 before he resigned in a dispute with President James A. Garfield. Sixteen years later he was again elected as a Senator from New York, and he served from 1897 to 1909.
