George Alois Lance enlisted in the United States Marine Corps on December 11, 1941, and was first assigned to "H & S" Company, then to Company "I", Third Battalion, 23rd Marine Regiment (Reinforced), which had been activated on July 20, 1942 at New River, North Carolina; which was later assigned to the 4th Marine Division in February 1943 and relocated during July 1943 to Camp Pendleton, California. In 1943 he was assigned Company "I" Third Battalion, Twenty-Fifth Marines, Fourth Marine Division, Fleet Marine Force, Camp Joseph H Pendleton. Finally still assigned to "I" Company, 3rd Battalion, 25th Regiment., 4th Marine Division, Fleet Marine Force when he was killed in action on Tinian. (bio by: Jay Lance)

Sgt. George A. Lance Jr., 19 years old, of the Marine Corps, son of George A. Lance of Flat River, and grandson of Mr. and Mrs. J. P. Slaughter, 620 South Ellis street, who had raised him following the death of his mother when he was quite small, was killed in action on July 24, according to a War Department telegram received Wednesday by his father, who notified his grandparents and other relatives in this city. Sgt. Lance, who had not been heard from since July 19, except through a close friend who expressed doubts as to his safety, was buried on Tinian Island, one of the islands in the Marianas group, where he is presumed to have been killed. Sgt. Lance, born in St. Louis Jan. 31, 1925, attended St. Mary's High School here and enlisted in the Marine Corps, Dec. 10, 1941, at the age of 17, being trained for duty in California and North Carolina. He left the States on Christmas Day, 1943, to serve overseas, and had been stationed in the Pacific theater of operations since. In addition to his father and grandparents. Sgt. Lance is survived by a sister, Mrs. Ed Schuh of St. Louis.

Sgt. Lance Services Will Be Held in Cape

The body of Sgt. George A. Lance Jr., son of George Lance of Elvins and formerly of Cape Girardeau, who was killed in action on the Tinian Islands in the South Pacific, July 24, 1944, will arrive in Cape Girardeau Wednesday and will be taken to the Walther Funeral Home. Funeral services will be conducted at 9 a.m. Wednesday at St. Mary's Church with Very Rev. Theon A. Schoen in charge. Interment will be in St. Mary's Cemetery. Full military rites will be accorded by the Veterans of Foreign Wars at the cemetery. The Rosary will be recited at 8 o'clock Tuesday night at the funeral home. Besides his parents, he is survived by a sister, Mrs. Eddie Shuh of St. Louis and his grandmother, Mrs. James P. Slaughter of Cape Girardeau. His mother, the former Miss Laurine Hitt, passed away a few years ago. He was born in Cape Girardeau on Jan. 31, 1924, and was educated in the schools here.
