Estimable Lady Passed Away
Mrs. J.J. Sprague Died Friday Morning After Long Illness. Funeral Held Sunday.
Mrs. J.J. Sprague, a resident of the community the greater part of her life, answered the final summons Friday morning, after several years of failing health. Although Mrs. Sprague was not confined to her bed all the time, either her daughter of sister have remained with her when it was necessary for her son to be away from home. Since moving to town in the spring of last year, she has been confined closely to her home.
Lilla Day, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Day, was born near Ottawa, Ill., on April 11th., 1855. She came with her parents to this community when a small child and grew to womanhood here. She taught school for several years and was very successful in her chosen line of work. On April 14th, 1881, she was married to J.J. Sprague and they established their home on a farm near here. In 1884 they moved to Nebraska and remained there one year; they then went to Kansas where hey farmed five years. Returning to La Porte City they purchased a farm in Cedar township and soon afterward constructed a new house which had just been completed when Mr. Sprague died on January 23rd, 1902. After the death of her husband, Mrs. Sprague and son, Jay, remained on the farm until a year ago last spring when they moved to town on account of her poor health and advanced age.
Surviving is one daughter, Mrs. W. W. Lamos, one son, Jay Sprague, and one sister, Mrs. Annie Stone, all of La Porte City; there are also three grandchildren and five great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one son, who was taken in infancy.
Funeral service was held Sunday afternoon in the M.E. church at two-thirty o’clock and was conducted by Rev. C.D. James of Nora Springs, a former pastor. Misses Carol Ashley and Bessie Sawyer sang favorite hymns and Mrs. C.A. Brust played the accompaniments. The casket bearers were former neighbors, O.A. Brown, W.S. Peck, George Fell, Ray Anton, August Stahnke and Cecil Davis. Interment was made in the family plot in West View cemetery.
